Analysis of Design Purpose and Precautions for Die Casting Inserts

A professional die casting designer is certainly no stranger to die casting design specifications. Generally, die casting design must consider seven aspects: die casting wall thickness, casting fillets and draft angles, ribs, holes and minimum distance from hole to edge on die castings, rectangular holes and slots on die castings, inserts in die castings, and machining allowances. Before die casting production, professional designers must address these seven aspects according to actual casting requirements. It should be emphasized that each aspect is of great significance to subsequent die casting production, requiring designers to be particularly careful in the design process to ensure rationality and comprehensiveness. For the design of inserts in die castings, insert design is very important for subsequent production, serving three purposes: (1) Inserts can effectively improve and enhance local process performance of die castings, such as strength, hardness, and wear resistance; (2) Insert design can integrate multiple components into one casting; (3) Using inserts can avoid overly complex parts on castings, such as deep holes and internal undercuts that cannot be extracted from the core. While insert design has benefits for die castings, the following aspects must be noted when designing die castings with inserts: First, the number of inserts on the casting should not be too many; Second, the connection between the insert and the die casting must be firm, requiring grooves, protrusions, or knurling on the insert; Third, inserts must avoid sharp corners to facilitate placement and prevent stress concentration in the casting. If there is severe galvanic corrosion between the casting and insert, the insert surface needs protective coating; Finally, castings with inserts should avoid heat treatment to prevent insert loosening due to volume changes caused by phase transformations of the two metals. The importance of die casting insert design and adoption is obvious. Designers must clearly understand its importance and pay special attention to the aspects that need attention during the design process.
