In the lost foam casting process, lost foam casting coatings are applied to the foam patterns. There are various methods for applying lost foam coatings, including brushing, dipping, pouring, spraying, or combinations of dipping and pouring. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, and enterprises can choose the suitable coating application method based on their own conditions. Regarding the spray coating method, it uses a spray gun to apply the coating onto the foam pattern, and its work efficiency is higher than brush coating with much lower labor intensity, which is certainly a positive aspect. However, since refractory coatings have high specific gravity and viscosity, if spray coating is to be used, the coating must be atomized and sprayed, which is challenging for enterprises. Additionally, since the coating is sprayed onto easily damaged foam plastic patterns, the impact force of the coating on the foam pattern must be as small as possible, which is also extremely difficult. The following is a detailed introduction to the difficulties encountered in using the spray coating method: (1) During spraying, the impact force of the coating on the foam pattern is difficult to control. If the impact force is too large, it will cause deformation or damage to the foam pattern, or even scrapping. (2) During coating spraying, some dead corners cannot be reached, and the second spray tends to damage the first coating layer, making quality assurance difficult. (3) The spray coating method easily causes coating waste, resulting in certain losses for the enterprise. A considerable portion of the atomized coating from the spray gun does not land on the foam pattern, wasting coating while also causing some environmental pollution. (4) The spray coating method has strict technical requirements for the coating. The coating concentration must be moderate; if too high, it often cannot be sprayed or the spraying will be uneven; if too low, it will flow or fail to adhere. Additionally, if the coating contains large particles or foreign matter, it can easily clog the nozzle, delaying production progress. Although the spray coating method has strict technical requirements for coatings and various difficulties in use, it is still favored by casting enterprises due to its high work efficiency and low labor intensity. Currently, many enterprises use the spray coating method to apply lost foam coatings.
